Expert care for Pulmonary Embolism at Westchase Pulmonary

What is Pulmonary Embolism?

A Pulmonary Embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot, usually from the legs, travels to the lungs and blocks a pulmonary artery. This sudden blockage reduces oxygen levels and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

How is it Diagnosed?

Diagnosis often involves a CT pulmonary angiogram, V/Q scan, blood tests (D-dimer), and sometimes ultrasound of the legs to look for deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

How is it Treated?

Treatment aims to restore blood flow and prevent new clots. Common treatments include anticoagulant medications (blood thinners), thrombolytics to dissolve large clots, and oxygen therapy. In severe cases, surgical clot removal (embolectomy) may be necessary.
