Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD’s)

Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD’s)

Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD’s) are a group of disorders that cause inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) of the lung tissue surrounding the air sacs (alveoli). This scarring makes it harder for the lungs to deliver oxygen to the bloodstream, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, dry cough, and fatigue.

ILD’s can develop from a variety of causes — including autoimmune diseases, environmental exposures, infections, medications, or, in some cases, without a known cause (idiopathic). Because ILD’s progress differently for each person, early evaluation by a lung specialist is important.

Common Types of Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD’s)

At Westchase Pulmonary & Sleep Associates, we diagnose and treat several forms of ILD’s, including:

  • Pulmonary FibrosisLung scarring that reduces oxygen flow.
  • Interstitial PneumonitisInflammation of lung tissue often triggered by infection or immune response.
  • SarcoidosisA condition where clusters of inflammatory cells (granulomas) form in the lungs and other organs.
